Finca Sa Marjaleta
Finca Sa Marjaleta produces wines under the name Iamontanum, word derived from Iamona, the Roman name of Ciutadella de Menorca.
The vineyard
This vineyard is in the Sa Marjaleta estate, some 9 km south of the town of Ciutadella. The vines stand on a gentle south-facing slope that protects them from the strong north winds. In addition, the well-drained soils and the long hours of insolation guarantee that the grapes will mature well. The soils are calcareous, clayey-loam, stony and shallow. In all, the estate has 2 ha of vines (varieties Syrah, Tempranillo and Viognier) growing on espaliers.
The bodega
To create room for the bodega the estate’s former dairy – once used to produce cheese – has been refurbished. The first vines were planted in 2006 and the first wine was produced with the grapes from the first harvest in 2009. This wine was first commercialized in 2010 and the estate currently produces around 4,000 bottles annually, which are sold locally. In coming years, it its hoped to double the estate’s production. Visits can be arranged by phoning 971 38 57 37.
The wines
Finca Sa Marjaleta produces three wines from grapes grown only on the estate under the name Iamontanum, a derivation of the Roman name Iamona for the town of Ciutadella that referred to the wines that were produced there.
• iamontanum blanc: A young white with four months of crianza sur lie, made from Viognier grapes.
• iamontanum negre criança: A red crianza aged for 12 months in barrels of American oak, made from Syrah grapes.
• iamontanum negre roure: A young red, aged for six months in barrels of American oak, made from Tempranillo grapes.
How to get there
Sa Marjaleta is 9 km south of Ciutadella. From the town, take the road to Sant Joan de Missa. At this small church, turn right towards Cala en Turqueta and the vineyards are on your right after 4 km.

New projects have sprung up and born fruit, and in 2002 a geographical denomination Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca was awarded to the island’s wines. The typical Menorcan wine is red, made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It is brilliant cherry in colour, with bouquets of red fruit and spices. To the taste, it is well rounded, mid-range, well structured and balanced.

Since my last comment, I’ve reminded myself that the shop was called Vitis Vinoteca and I’ve discovered that it is permanently closed. Is there anywhere else I could purchase (and have shipped to me) a dozen bottles of Iamontanum (syrah)?
In the past I have purchased Iamontanum wine from a shop in Ciutadella (with the help of Gloria), but, when I was in Ciutadella earlier this month, I couldn’t find the shop (which I was sure was in Avinguda de Jaume I el Conqueridor). Unfortunately, I can’t remember the name of the shop, and I have mislaid its e-mail address.
Can you help me?
