The Hort de Sant Patrici bodega
Wines of Menorca made with varieties merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah planted in a calcareous-clayey soil and watered by a local stream.
The vineyard
This vineyard lies within the estate of Sant Patrici, very near the town of Ferreries. Its soils, situated at 100 m above sea-level, are watered by a local stream and are calcareous-clayey in nature. Since 2000, almost 2 ha of land have been devoted to vines (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah) growing on espaliers on terraces due to the slope of the land. The end of each row of vines is decorated with a rosebush, which serves to detect diseases such as powdery mildew before they attack the vines.

The bodega
Hort de Sant Patrici is a small well-run family concern that has commercialized its wines since 2008. They produce around 8,000 bottles per year that are mainly sold on the local market; nevertheless, they are beginning to export a small part of their production to countries in central and northern Europe. The bodega, installed in an old animal-house, is equipped with fully up-to-date machinery and can be visited all-year around (tel.: 971 37 37 02).

The wines
The wines, two reds and a rosé, are produced exclusively from grapes from the Hort Sant Patrici estate.
• Hort Merlot: A red crianza, produced using only Merlot grapes. Matured in barrels of French and American oak for six months.
• Hort Cupatge: A red crianza, produced using Cabernet Sauvignon grapes complemented with a touch of Merlot. Matured in barrels of French and American oak for 12 months.
• Cayetana: A young rosé, initially produced using mainly Syrah with a touch of Merlot. However, the eventual aim is to produce a rosé with just Syrah grapes once the production of this variety has increased sufficiently.
How to get there
Sant Patrici is 2 km north Ferreries. To get there, take the road of the same name from the roundabout on the main road that also takes you to the local industrial estate and the town’s only petrol-station. If you want to avoid entering Ferreries, take the ring-road and you will see the junction with a sign indicating the road to the estate..
There is a regular bus service to Ferreries from where you can walk the remaining 2 km to Sant Patrici. Check out bus times and frequencies (that vary according to the season).

New projects have sprung up and born fruit, and in 2002 a geographical denomination Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca was awarded to the island’s wines. The typical Menorcan wine is red, made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It is brilliant cherry in colour, with bouquets of red fruit and spices.
