Binigaus beach
Binigaus is the largest unspoilt beach on the south coast of Menorca, with no services and within walking distance of the nearest car park. For this reason, it is also the most popular beach in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran.
Binigaus Beach is located where the flat central south coast of Menorca ends and the western cliffs begin. In the past, this allowed us to choose between settling in the widest and lowest central area of the beach or in the narrower, quieter coves at the far end, right at the foot of the cliffs. Recently, however, the cliffs have suffered significant rockfalls and today, even if it is possible to pass, this area is dangerous.
The waters are clear and shallow, making it ideal for families with children. In addition, the access path is short and flat. A perfect Menorca beach to enjoy a family day out in the middle of nature. A true luxury.
The natural dynamics of the sand on this beach, as well as on the neighbouring beaches of Sant Tomàs and Sant Adeodat, mean that there is more or less sand depending on the year. In some years, much of the beach can even be covered with pebbles.
Recently, it has become very fashionable to take mud baths using the clays from the cliffs of Binigaus Beach. Taking mud baths on beaches erodes the base of the cliffs, creating instability in their upper sections, causing rockfalls and posing a risk to beach users. This activity also uproots vegetation and causes the shoreline to retreat, destroying a non-renewable resource, since clays are very ancient rocks. Try to make your visit to Menorca’s natural areas go unnoticed. Leave no trace!
How to get to Binigaus Beach
To get to Binigaus Beach, you must first go to Sant Tomàs, 2 km from Es Migjorn Gran, which can be reached by different roads from Ferreries (10 km), Es Mercadal (11 km) and Alaior (15.5 km), depending on your point of origin. Once in Sant Tomàs, take the section of the Camí de Cavalls that starts at the end of the beach near the Es Bruc restaurant, right next to the car park. In just over 10 minutes on foot, you will reach Binigaus Beach.
Public transport: Sant Tomàs can be reached by several bus lines from Maó, Ciutadella, Alaior, Es Mercadal, Ferreries and Es Migjorn Gran. Check timetables and frequencies depending on the time of year.
