Son Saura del Sud beaches
The Son Saura del Sud beaches, in the municipality of Ciutadella de Menorca, are among the largest unspoilt beaches on the south coast, with the shade of a splendid pine forest behind them and easy access by car.
Son Saura del Sud is a group of two beaches separated by a small low rocky formation. The first one you reach from the car park is Des Banyul beach, more popular with families with children due to its proximity to the parking area and the much-appreciated shade of its pine forest. A short distance away you will find Bellavista beach, slightly longer, with a dune system running parallel to the beach and an interesting wetland area at its rear. To get there, you will cross the Canal de les Abelles via a small wooden bridge. This channel is carved into the rock itself and serves to channel the mouth of the small stream that reaches the beach.
Both beaches have fine white sand, very shallow waters and little wave action, except when a south or south-west wind is blowing. This makes them one of the most appreciated unspoilt beaches in Menorca, with heavy visitor numbers at the height of summer, especially families vacationing in Menorca. The only service you will find on the beach during the tourist season is a lifeguard.
At the beaches of Son Saura del Sud it is very common to find posidonia, which is not completely removed in order to prevent degradation of the sand.
During the summer months there is usually a large concentration of anchored boats, and boat excursions from Ciutadella de Menorca and nearby resorts often land here. However, every summer, protective buoys are installed for swimmers to prevent boats from entering the bathing area.
How to get to the beaches of Son Saura del Sud
Do not confuse them with the Son Saura del Nord beach, in the municipality of Es Mercadal!
The beaches of Son Saura del Sud are about 10 km from Ciutadella. You can reach them by taking the Camí de Sant Joan de Missa from the southern ring road of Ciutadella. Before reaching the hermitage of Sant Joan de Missa, turn right onto the Camí de Son Saura, an asphalted road except for the last 200 metres, which will take you to the beach.
During the summer months, along the whole route, you will find information panels indicating whether there are free spaces in the beach car park. If it is full, it is better to change plans and choose another beach.
Public transport: There is a summer bus line connecting Ciutadella with the Talayotic settlement of Son Catlar and the beaches of Son Saura del Sud. Ideal if you don’t have a car or want to avoid parking problems. Check timetables and frequencies according to the time of year.

• Camí de Cavalls: The beaches of Son Saura del Sud lie on stage 12 of the Camí de Cavalls between Cap d’Artrutx and Cala Turqueta. If you want to go on a good walk from Son Saura del Sud you can walk to Cala Turqueta, passing Cala es Talaier and skirting the Atalaia d’Artrutx. • Cala es Talaier: Small beach about 25 metres wide with fine white sand and surrounded by pine trees, located a short distance from Bellavista Beach, following the signs of the Camí de Cavalls.
• Talaia d’Artrutx: Old defence tower built in 1617, located between Cala Turqueta and Cala es Talaier, offering fine panoramic views of the south coast of Menorca. Unfortunately, it is on private property and cannot be visited. These towers were built to watch for and defend against pirate or military incursions.
• Talayotic settlement of Son Catlar: the only Talayotic settlement in the Balearic Islands that has preserved its cyclopean wall almost intact.
