A common species in all types of open habitat. The first individuals appear in February and the last are seen well into the autumn. Its tendency to migrate means that it is most common in May-June due to the arrival of individuals from North Africa and in September-October due to insects heading south from northern Europe. It spends the winter as a caterpillar that feeds on numerous different species of clover.
