Swim among fish in the Cal\u00f3 Fondo (Binissaf\u00faller)<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cal\u00f3 Fondo,\u00a0popularly known as Ses Olles de Binissaf\u00faller, is a rocky bathing place in Binissaf\u00faller on the southern coast of the municipality of Sant Llu\u00eds.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The cove<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Its half-moon shape and the fact that it is sheltered by the Illots d\u2019en Mar\u00e7al<\/b> mean it is protected from most winds other than the south-south-west gales. It is not very deep (8\u201310 m) and is very safe because in the summer it is roped off and boats are not allowed to enter.\u00a0The rocks here are limestone and the surrounding cliffs \u2013 albeit not very high \u2013 are deeply incised. There is no sand or beach here, just some flattish rocky platforms where the local neighbourhood association places steps in summer to make access to the water much easier.<\/p>\n

The seabed<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The seabed here is of white sand in the centre, surrounded by some thinnish patches of posidonia. The cove is surrounded by cliffs, more vertical to the north and with fallen blocks to the south.\u00a0The diversity of seabed habitats and its shallowness mean that a great variety of different fish \u2013 which are fairly tame as they are used to divers \u2013 can be seen here easily. Look out for saddled and <\/i>annular seabreams, red mullet and numerous groups of two-banded seabream <\/i>and damselfish.\u00a0There is also a wonderful diversity of algae attached to the rocks here. You will find light-loving species such as Acetabularia <\/i>(easy to recognise since it looks like a small umbrella), as well as others such as Corallina elongata <\/i>and Pterocladiella capillacea<\/i> that prefer shadier sites.<\/i><\/p>\n

How to get there<\/strong><\/h2>\n

C<\/strong>al\u00f3 Fondo<\/b> is in Binissaf\u00faller<\/b>, just over 9 km from\u00a0Ma\u00f3<\/b>\u00a0and 5 km from\u00a0Sant Llu\u00eds<\/b>. Take the road from this latter population through\u00a0s\u2019Ullastrar<\/b>\u00a0towards the beaches of the south coast. After about 2 km (after passing the turn-off to\u00a0Binib\u00e8quer<\/b>) at the prehistoric settlement of\u00a0Binissafullet<\/b>, turn left and then right 2 km further on.\u00a0Follow Carrer de Llevant in Binissaf\u00faller<\/b> for 1 km down to the sea, just in front of Cal\u00f3 Fondo or Ses Olles de Binissaf\u00faller.<\/p>\n

In the high season a bus runs from Ma\u00f3 – Sant Llu\u00eds – Binibeca<\/strong>. It will drop you in the tourist village of Binib\u00e8quer Vell, from where a 10-minute walk westwards along the Cam\u00ed de Cavalls<\/strong> will take you to Cal\u00f3 Fondo<\/strong>. \u2022 <\/strong><\/span>Binib\u00e8quer Vell: <\/strong><\/span>Small, curious tourist village designed by the architect Antoni Sintes Mercadal in 1972. It\u2019s worth wandering around its labyrinth of narrow back streets.<\/p>\n
