Speckled wood<\/h1>\n

Very common and abundant, <\/b>appearing in all sorts of shady habitats<\/b>. It is one of the most woodland <\/b>of all our butterflies and is present along the paths and tracks that run through our woods and around patches of scrub growing up the old dry-stone walls. It is less common in dry open areas. The males are territorial and often perch on branches and patches of sunlight waiting for the females to come by. If another male passes by, the two males begin to fly upwards in a spiral in which the territory owner forces the intruder to fly off. It flies throughout the whole year<\/b> and is one of the few butterflies that is still active even when there is little sun<\/b>. It hibernates as a larva or a chrysalis, although if the weather is warm it is active throughout almost the whole year.
